Mental Health Counselor
O*NET-SOC: 21-1014.00
Counsels individuals, groups, and families to treat mental and emotional disorders, helping clients develop strategies to manage anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, and other behavioral health concerns.
About this Role
Mental health counselors work with individuals, couples, and groups to address emotional and psychological challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, and substance use. A typical day involves meeting with several clients in scheduled sessions, each lasting about 50 minutes, where they listen carefully, ask questions, and guide conversations using evidence-based approaches to help clients understand patterns in their thinking and behaviour. Between sessions they write detailed notes, update treatment plans, and coordinate with other providers such as psychiatrists or social workers when a client needs additional support.
